UNIT 29 AND 30: My initial ideas

I have 3 initial ideas for this brief. The ideas came from looking at the title of the brief, “People And Places”.

My first idea is photographing homeless people. I think this is a good idea because the idea relates to the brief because the brief states “It is your choice whether you wish to capture elements of your life or the life of someone or something else”. I also like this idea because I have some interest in photographing homeless people because I find photographs of homeless people have a lot of meaning and I like images with a lot meaning. I don’t think this is a good idea because the homeless people might not want their pictures taken therefore I will not have my final images. Another issue I have with this idea is sometimes homeless people can have mental issues and may go after me when taking picture of them. I can look at Henri Cartier-Bresson for inspiration because he is the best photographer to look at when it comes to documentary photography. I can start researching this idea by using the website, Pinterest because the website allows me to “pin” images to a digital mood board. I can also look in the college library to see if there is any books with Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work in it. I can also visit the open eye gallery to see what exhibitions are on. The equipment I think I will need for this idea is a 50mm lens because a 50mm lens can give a personal feel to the image. I want to add this personal feel to my own images because I think this will make my images stand out. I personally think I won’t need a tripod for this idea because a tripod will slow me down whilst taking pictures. The target audience I think for this idea is a mature audience because a younger audience may not be mature enough to understand the topic. There is a downside to this because I would be restricting myself to a set audience which I don’t want to do because I want to target everyone with my final outcomes because more people will see the final images.

My second idea is photographing a model in a studio. The final images will be similar to behind the scenes images. This idea will link to the brief title because the studio is an indoor location and the model will be in their location. I really want to do this idea because I want to work on my studio skills. I also want to do this idea because the idea will a be a unique twist on the brief title. The only issue I have with this is idea is the images may not be what the examiners are looking for because the brief is all about location photography. I can take images of the studio set up  I can look at Tim Walker for inspiration because he is one of my favourite portrait photographers. I can also look at Martin Parr for inspiration because of how he captures emotion at the perfect time. I can start my research for this idea by looking at books because the books will have descriptions of what the images are about. I can use the website, Pinterest because the website allows me to put images which give me inspiration, on to a digital mood board. With health and safety I will need to have a member of staff in studio because the studio is on college premises. Another health and safety point is taping lighting wires down because people can trip over lighting wires when they aren’t taped down, taping the wires will avoid a tripping hazard. Another health and safety point is putting bags and coats to one side because people can trip over bags and coats whilst walking around the studio, putting bags and coats will avoid another tripping hazard. The equipment I think I will need for this idea is a wide lens because it will add to the feeling of behind the scenes shot. I personally think a tripod can be used here because I won’t have to move as much compared to my other two ideas. I can use a soft box because it will flatter the models facial features because with a soft box it gives soft lighting to the image. I will also use a soft box because it will ensure the image will be well lit. The target audience I think for this idea is everyone because there is no mature topic with idea, unlike my homeless people idea.

My third idea is photographing buskers. I think this fits the brief because images will be taken out on location which is what brief wants us to do. I also like the idea because the emotion you can get from the buskers. I don’t like the idea because the buskers may not want their pictures taken therefore I won’t have my final images. I can look at the likes of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Martin Parr because they are great inspiration when you are going to do documentary photography. With Henri Cartier-Bresson you can get the old feeling to images because Bresson shot with film. On the other hand you will get a modern feeling to images when looking at Martin Parr because Parr shot with digital cameras. I can start researching this idea by using the website, Pinterest because the website allows me to “pin” images on to digital mood boards. This website will be helpful because I can “pin” images which gives me inspiration. I can also visit gallery’s to see they are exhibiting work by Henri Cartier-Bresson and/or Martin Parr. I can also look at gallery’s to see they are exhibiting documentary photography because I want to shoot in a documentary style because I think a documentary style will suit this idea because the idea comes across as documentary. The target audience I think for this idea is everyone because buskers isn’t a mature topic. I also think the target audience is people who are interested in music because buskers are musical.

In conclusion I am going to throw out my second idea because I don’t think the images for the idea will be suitable for the brief and I don’t think the images will be what the examiners are looking for because they will be indoors not outside. I am going to keep my first and third idea because the images will be what the examiners are looking for and the images will link to the brief title.
